The Huilonghu Organic Super Hybrid Rice Research and Development Base is the first organic super hybrid rice R&D base in Hunan Province, jointly established by the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center and Hunan Huilonghu Modern Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. It will take the lead in conducting research on related cultivation technologies and serve as a demonstration and public exchange platform for organic hybrid rice across the province. The reporter observed at this R&D base that the organic super hybrid rice, which uses proprietary organic fertilizer and employs physical methods and biological technology for pest control and disease treatment, is growing well. Base researcher Peng Jiming told the reporter that under the guidance of Academician Yuan Longping, the 180 mu of rice paddies cultivated with organic methods had all reached full heading by the end of August, with an estimated per-unit yield of 600 to 650 kilograms, an increase of more than 30 percent over the per-unit yield of conventional organic rice. Academician Yuan Longping stated that while ensuring increased rice yields, super hybrid rice research has also intensified efforts to further improve rice quality. Among the super hybrid rice combinations that have been bred in China, some rice varieties are even comparable in quality to the renowned Thai rice.
