On January 19, 2023, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) published the revised USDA Organic Program (NOP) to strengthen oversight and enforcement of the production, handling, and sale of organic agricultural products. The main contents of this revision are as follows:
Revise the applicability of the regulations and the circumstances under which organic certification may be exempted;
Mandate the use of NOP import sales certificates;
Revise the requirements for recordkeeping and product traceability;
Add requirements for the qualifications and training of certification body personnel;
Establish a standardized organic certification certificate;
Revise the requirements for unannounced on-site inspections of certified operations;
Add requirements for oversight of certification activities;
Add requirements for equivalence assessment between the NOP and other national standards;
Add requirements for certification of producer groups;
Add labeling requirements for non-retail products;
Revise the requirements for annual maintenance of certification for certified operations;
Revise compliance and appeal procedures;
