On May 26, Vice Minister of Agriculture Chen Xiaohua announced the opening of the 5th China International Organic Food Expo (BioFach China 2011) at the Shanghai International Exhibition Center and cut the ribbon for the expo.
While visiting the expo, Chen Xiaohua pointed out that organic food is an important component of China's development of safe and high-quality brand agricultural products. In the future, it is necessary to continue to be guided by market demand, adhere to the principle of proceeding from national conditions and adapting to local conditions, and actively and steadily promote the development of organic food in certain regions that have environmental advantages, resource conditions, and product characteristics.
Ma Aiguo, Director General of the Department of Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, said in his speech that pollution-free agricultural products, green food, organic agricultural products, and geographical indication agricultural products are safe and high-quality public brands led by the Chinese government. Practice has proven that developing the “three categories and one indication” and promoting standardization through branding is an important way to improve the quality and safety level of agricultural products and transform the mode of agricultural development. In recent years, organic food has maintained a relatively rapid development trend, with the total scale continuously expanding and brand influence steadily increasing. It has played a positive role in meeting the consumer demand of domestic and international markets for safe and high-quality agricultural products, enhancing the market competitiveness of agricultural products, and promoting agricultural efficiency and farmers' income. The China Green Food Development Center and NürnbergMesse GmbH of Germany have jointly cooperated to hold the Organic Food Expo in Shanghai for five consecutive years. This has not only provided an important window for displaying the brand image of China's organic food, but also built a professional platform for promoting exchanges and trade cooperation in the domestic and international organic food industry, playing a positive role in promoting the development of China's organic food industry.
It is understood that the participation of international organic food enterprises in this expo was the strongest of all previous sessions. The 10,000-square-meter exhibition area brought together more than 340 organic production enterprises, displaying thousands of organic products from nearly 20 countries and regions, including Germany, Australia, France, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and Hong Kong. In addition to organic agricultural products and processed products such as vegetables, fruits, and dairy products, a variety of imported organic products, including organic black tea, organic olive oil, organic red wine, and natural cosmetics, made their debut in the Chinese market, attracting more than a thousand Chinese and foreign buyers for business negotiations and procurement. At the expo, the organizing committee also specially set up a “LOHAS Area” and organized activities such as the “LOHAS Experience Camp,” “Organic Farm Tour,” and “Organic Lifestyle Exhibition.” Through rich displays and on-site interaction, these activities promoted to visitors the concepts of environmental protection, health, and sustainable consumption and lifestyles.
During the expo, the “2011 China Organic Food Market and Development International Seminar” was also held. Experts conducted in-depth discussions on hot topics such as the development trends of the global organic food market, policies and regulations for the development of China's organic food, organic production standards and technologies, and the market development and certification of natural cosmetics. They provided a comprehensive analysis of China's organic production management standards, the effectiveness of certification, and the quality of China's organic products. Organic food retailers from Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong, China, also analyzed and forecast domestic and international organic markets, and at the same time elaborated on attitudes toward and demand for organic products from the perspective of consumers.
