On May 26, Vice Minister of Agriculture Chen Xiaohua announced the opening of the Fifth China International Organic Food Expo (BioFachChina2011) at the Shanghai International Exhibition Center and cut the ribbon for the expo.
While visiting the expo, Chen Xiaohua pointed out that organic food is an important component of China's development of safe and high-quality branded agricultural products. Going forward, we should continue to be guided by market demand, adhere to the principles of suiting measures to local conditions and proceeding from national conditions, and actively yet prudently promote the development of organic food in certain regions that enjoy environmental advantages, resource conditions, and distinctive product features.
Ma Aiguo, Director-General of the Department of Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Supervision and Management of the Ministry of Agriculture, said in his address that pollution-free agricultural products, green food, organic agricultural products, and geographical indication agricultural products are safe and high-quality public brands led by the Chinese government. Practice has proven that developing the “Three Products and One Indication” and using branding to drive standardization is an important way to improve the quality and safety level of agricultural products and transform the mode of agricultural development. In recent years, organic food has maintained a relatively rapid development momentum, with the overall scale continuously expanding and brand influence steadily rising, playing a positive role in meeting domestic and international market demand for safe and high-quality agricultural products, enhancing the market competitiveness of agricultural products, and promoting agricultural efficiency and farmers' income growth. The China Green Food Development Center and Germany's Nuremberg International Exhibition Company have jointly cooperated to hold the Organic Food Expo in Shanghai for five consecutive years, which has not only provided an important window for displaying the brand image of China's organic food, but also built a professional platform for promoting exchanges and trade cooperation in the domestic and international organic food industry, playing a positive role in advancing the development of China's organic food industry.
It is understood that the participation of international organic food enterprises in this year's expo was the strongest of any previous session. The 10,000-square-meter exhibition area brought together more than 340 organic production enterprises, showcasing thousands of organic products from nearly 20 countries and regions, including Germany, Australia, France, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and Hong Kong. In addition to organic agricultural products and processed products such as vegetables, fruits, and dairy products, a variety of imported organic products, including organic black tea, organic olive oil, organic red wine, and natural cosmetics, made their debut on the Chinese market, attracting more than a thousand Chinese and foreign buyers for business negotiations and procurement. At the expo, the organizing committee also specially set up a “LOHAS Zone” and organized activities such as the “LOHAS Experience Camp,” “Organic Farm Tour,” and “Organic Lifestyle Exhibition,” promoting and popularizing environmental protection, health, and sustainable consumption concepts and lifestyles to visitors through rich displays and on-site interaction.
During the expo, the “2011 China Organic Food Market and Development International Seminar” was also held. Experts conducted in-depth discussions on hot topics such as global organic food market development trends, policies and regulations for China's organic food development, organic production standards and technologies, and the market development and certification of natural cosmetics, providing a comprehensive analysis of China's organic production management norms, the effectiveness of certification, and the quality of China's organic products. Organic food retailers from Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong, China, among other places, also analyzed and forecast domestic and international organic markets, while elaborating on attitudes toward and demand for organic products from the perspective of consumers.
