Beijing, 25 May (Xinhuanet) — Tests recently carried out by the Royal Society of Chemistry on food packaging labels have revealed that the adhesive used in many self-adhesive labels contains highly toxic chemical substances.文章源自FOFCC-http://fofcc.org.cn/en/11237/
According to reports, a study by the Royal Society of Chemistry found that many product labels on the outside of food packaging use acrylic adhesives, the majority of which contain highly toxic chemicals.文章源自FOFCC-http://fofcc.org.cn/en/11237/
Research has found that 11 toxins were detected in the food packaging adhesives from the 4 sampled food items, causing harm to the human body comparable to that of mercury or hydrochloric acid. Among them, 4 are permeable toxins that can seep through the outer packaging and contaminate the food.文章源自FOFCC-http://fofcc.org.cn/en/11237/
The study does not state the origin of the randomly inspected food, but emphasises that such toxic labels are “commonly used”. Ingestion of these toxins by humans may affect the visceral systems, and some toxins can be carcinogenic, cause infertility, lead to immune system disorders and neurological pathologies, and large amounts ingested can directly cause death.文章源自FOFCC-http://fofcc.org.cn/en/11237/
Reports say that current European food safety regulations only emphasise that these toxins must not come into direct contact with food, but do not prohibit their presence in label adhesives.文章源自FOFCC-http://fofcc.org.cn/en/11237/
