On 19 January, as reporters walked into Kewen Farm in Zhoutuozi Village, Xinmin City, they saw various vegetables “smiling” in rows of high-standard solar greenhouses. Kewen Farm is a vegetable industrialisation base of Shenyang Agricultural University. It began construction and organic vegetable production experiments in 2007, obtained organic vegetable and food certification on 11 April 2010, and established Kewen Organic Vegetable Farm in May. How can we ensure that vegetables meet organic standards? Zhang Enping, associate professor and head of the production base, explained that during the vegetable production process, the most crucial requirement is the prohibition of synthetic chemicals and genetic engineering products, including pesticides, chemical fertilisers, hormones and genetically modified varieties. The yield of organic vegetables is one-third lower than that of conventional vegetables, and labour costs are also higher, meaning the production costs of organic vegetables are about five times those of field-grown vegetables.
